APN
APN (Access Point Name)

The APN represents an IP network. An APN has two parts: the APN-Network Id (example: gc.internet.uk) and the APN-operator Id (example: mnc. mcc.gprs)
APN = * (wildcard) potentially authorizes the MS to activate any APN.
 Examples of APN:
•gc.internet.uk.mnc001.mcc208.gprs
•gc.mms.uk.mnc001.mcc208.gprs
•gc.wap.uk.mnc001.mcc208.gprs
•blackberry.net
OR only one APN can also be used for all the services.
Single APN and Access Profiles Single APN
•gc.uk.mnc001.mcc208.gprs

Corporate & consumer services and charging with a single APN

And For Blackberry Services the APN blackberry.net is common APN used worldwide.
•blackberry.net
APN and PDP Model is also Configured in HLR
>HLR independent provisioning
>Hierarchical APN structure
>Enhanced APN & PDP profiles

Maximum length for APN can be 100 Octets.
Maximum Length for Network ID can be 63 Octets; Maximum Length for Operator ID is 37 Octets.
APN name mapped to the Corresponding GGSN IP address in the DNS

APN named is stored in the Handset and is never changed.

In Roaming also the Subscriber uses the same APN setting of is Home PLMN and In this case the VPLMN SGSN is used but the GGSN is of Home PLMN used.

APN profiles include information about how dynamic IP addresses are assigned to mobile subscribers:
Method:
Static - PDP context requests from mobile subscribers will include an IP address, which the DHCP in GGSN should check against the range of this address pool. If the IP address sent by the mobile subscriber does not match this pool, the PDP context request will be rejected.
Dynamic - PDP context requests from mobile subscribers will not include an IP address and the DHCP in GGSN should assign an IP address to the mobile from this pool.
Static RIP /OSPF– Static allocation, pool should be advertised by RIP
Dynamic RIP/OSPF – Dynamic allocation, pool should be advertised by RIP

Algorithm:
Round robin
